there is rhythm in how the heart bleeds

there is rhythm in how the heart bleeds
and the heart bleeds more
than the wound after surgery
or the leaves flying off the autumn trees
and the heart sweats more
than the sun
that cuts through the incision
the way the surgeon’s knife cut through the skin
nerves
and muscles
to get that lump out out of your breast

there is rhythm in how rage boils
like lava that puts villages under ash
seas broiling
stars clouding
and the soil shaking
rage that is choking you from within
grabbing your heart and not letting go
like that lump inside of you
whispering at every turn
that life is untenable

and there is rhythm in how pain numbs
like at the Institute
where you had no change on you
so you asked the lady sitting next to you
if she had any candy
and she said she was sorry
she had metastatic bone cancer only
and you said you were sorry too
but you really needed that candy
your blood sugar levels were dangerously low

there is rhythm in each nightmare
extinction
life destroying itself at every turn
gamma ray bursts wiping races from under the sun
like radiation therapy
the universe swelling to the point of no return
even that lump inside of you
(especially that lump inside of you!)
announcing something obsolete
molding into new

so embrace the rhythm
of rage as your north star
and key to survival
the road to a healthy self
embrace each heartache
bone break
and nightmare
each numb pain and sharp bleed
forcing to regain your right to existence
signalling the arrival of something new
that is now the only You
